Disney's "Woke" Snow White Stumbles: Film Fans Avoid New Release

Movie theaters seem deserted during showings of Disney’s live-action adaptation of "Snow White" as disgruntled viewers boycott the remake due to its perceived increased focus on social issues.

It hit UK and US screens two days ago but the 2025 iteration of the 1812 fairy tale caused controversy among viewers long before its release.

A gloomy video shared on X displays a spacious movie theater that appears deserted, save for the solitary videographer. The film’s computer-generated dwarfs dominate the screen.

The video, with a ironic title 'so many people here to see Snow White,' reveals line after line of unoccupied chairs as it shifts focus.

One impressed commenter noted: "Snow White and the seven viewers."

And another said: 'Go woke Go bust — live from the box office.

Initially, the box office numbers suggest a bleak outlook for the remake, earning only $3.5 million during preview screenings.

It has faced criticism because of remarks made by its lead actor. Rachel Zegler And lacking the well-known tune "Someday My Prince Will Come."

Zegler encountered criticism after describing the 1937 animated film as 'odd' and 'highly outdated.'

During a 2022 interview, she stated: "Her relationship with the individual who essentially pursues her obsessively is heavily emphasized. It’s strange, very strange. We decided not to go down that path this time around."

Certainly, the latest iteration adopts a distinct perspective. The romantic narrative revolves around the main character and the head of a gang of robbers named Jonathan, rather than involving a prince.

Moreover, the princess doesn’t await her beloved to save her, even though he revives her with a kiss after she has died.

Recently, Daily Mail film critic Brian Viner commented on the lackluster remake saying, "Disney’s convoluted efforts to avoid offending anybody seem to have ended up alienating everybody instead."

Replacing actual actors with computer-generated dwarf characters has sparked outrage among many, and disability rights activists argue that the media giant squandered an excellent chance to involve individuals of short stature and add diversity to their ensemble.

There has been racial criticism following the announcement of Zegler, who has Colombian and Polish heritage, being cast as the 'white' and 'fair' princess.

Likewise, the decision to cast ex-IDF soldier Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen has led many viewers to protest against the film by boycotting it.

Her two-year service in the Israeli army, which was contentious from the start, involved her taking part in the 2006 conflict between Israel and Lebanon. This has significantly damaged her image across much of the Arab world as well as amongst those who support Palestine.

Even Disney faces problems with its movie, as an inside source allegedly described Zegler as 'unmanageable' because of her comments on the initial animated version.
