Mohammed Bajaber Returns: Kenyan Hero Welcomed by Police After Star Performance

  • Mohamed Bajaber was warmly welcomed by his Kenya Police team mates following his impressive performances with the Harambee Stars.
  • Bajaber gained national attention when he scored an impressive goal against Gambia, enabling Kenya to secure a valuable draw.
  • The forward-playing midfielder aims to replicate this performance with Kenya Police as they chase the Kenya Premier League title.

Mohammed Bajaber was welcomed back to his club following an impressive few days with the national team.

Bajaber quickly won over Kenya’s soccer enthusiasts when he netted a spectacular goal against Gambia last Thursday.

This marked the young player's debut as a complete Kenyan national team member, entering the game at the 62-minute mark in place of Eric Johana. The Harambee Stars found themselves behind by two goals due to strikes from Musa Barrow and Yankuba Minteh, who plays for Brighton.

Bajaber's first appearance didn't start well when he received a yellow card for a harsh tackle just moments after being brought onto the field.

Yet, just eight minutes thereafter, all previous thoughts were erased when Eric 'Marcelo' Ouma spotted him in open space. The forward playmaker juked by one opponent before depositing his strike into the upper part of the net.

The objective became even more visually appealing when it struck the upright initially, then bounced off the post before finding its way into the back of the net.

The Kenya Police team member quickly rose to fame, as numerous supporters purchased his jersey before the match against Gabon scheduled for Sunday. In recognition of this popularity, head coach Benni McCarthy decided to give him a starting position during the packed event at Nyayo National Stadium.

Although he didn't manage to get on target like Kenya did, ending up with a 2-1 defeat, his effort level stood out. In the 86th minute, he was substituted for Masoud Juma as McCarthy sought to secure an equalizer.

Bajaber returned to his club Kenya Police on Monday where he was treated to a heroic reception by his teammates.

He stated, 'The experience was positive. I managed to alter the game thankfully, and as a result, we secured a point.'

He likewise looked back at his beginning against Gabon and performing in front of the numerous supporters who filled Nyayo Stadium.

It was a privilege to begin the match against Gabon; after all, playing for one’s nation isn’t an everyday occurrence. My gratitude goes out to the supporters who showed up in such great numbers. Although we aimed for victory, it didn’t materialize—such is the nature of football. This outcome left us disheartened, yet our determination remains strong as we aim to secure a win in future encounters.

Bajaber now aims to motivate his team to clinch the Kenya Premier League championship. Currently, they top the leaderboard with 45 points from 24 matches, leading Tusker by just one point who sits in second position.

The current title holders, Gor Mahia, stand at third place with 42 points yet have competed in one match fewer than the top two teams. K'Ogalo will have their most significant match of the season this weekend when they face off against AFC Leopards in the Mashemeji derby.
