England achieved a 3-0 win against Latvia in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier match held at Wembley Stadium on Monday evening.

Reece James, Chelsea's right-back, started for England again after 2022 with an impressive free-kick in the 38th minute of their Group K match. Nevertheless, he chose not to celebrate scoring this goal.

The player, who is 25 years old, last represented England against Italy in March 2023 prior to appearing as a substitute against Albania on Friday.

When playing under his previous coach at Stamford Bridge, Thomas Tuchel, James began the match representing the Three Lions and managed to score during Monday’s victory against Latvia.

Why James chose not to revel in scoring against Latvia

In an interview with ITV Sport, James shared his delight at being back in the England team after a disappointing two-year period, calling his selection a major milestone.

A lot of water has passed under the bridge since then. The past couple of years have been quite exasperating for me. It’s incredibly delightful to receive this call from my nation once more.

After scoring the free-kick, he acknowledged that he noticed the wall and thought he could bend the ball past it. However, he was somewhat astonished when it actually ended up in the goal.

"I spotted the wall and believed I could curve it successfully. Fortunately, it struck the crossbar instead. Initially, I was astonished that it went in—the goalkeeper appeared to have a good shot at saving it—but upon reviewing the footage, it looked quite challenging for him," as reported by ITV through the Mirror.

He further highlighted that Tuchel’s concepts are well-defined and mentioned that the squad's primary aim starts now and runs all the way up to the World Cup.

Thomas Tuchel's objectives are straightforward. Our single aim begins this week and continues all the way through to the World Cup."

Tuchel conveyed his appreciation for James, mentioning that he has a deep understanding of him and deems his talent to be remarkable.

What's Next for James and England?

Following the international hiatus, James will return to Stamford Bridge to ready himself for a Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur.

In June, England will play their upcoming World Cup qualifier against Andorra, and then they will have a friendly match against Senegal at the City Ground.
