Richard Osman Vows to Combat AI Copyright Infringement
Bestselling author Richard Osman states he will 'step up to the challenge' Meta ' to fight against AI copyright infringement.
The TV host retaliated against the technology corporation following revelations about the parent company of Facebook , Instagram And WhatsApp has utilized millions of copyrighted books without permission to develop its AI systems.
Meta utilized a comprehensive search-capable database encompassing 7.5 million books and 81 million academic papers.
The dataset known as Library Genesis contains numerous copyrighted works, and this content has been utilized to train AI systems at Meta.
The Atlantic magazine, which released the searchable database, indicates that court records reveal Meta employees considered legally obtaining books and research papers through licensing. However, they opted to utilize or ‘ scrape’ pirated material instead as it proved quicker and more cost-effective.
Osman, aged 54, stated: "The copyright law isn’t complex whatsoever. Should you wish to utilize an author’s creation, obtaining permission is necessary."
If you utilize it without authorization, you're violating the law. It’s straightforward. Although it will be extremely challenging for us and other impacted sectors to confront Meta, we’ll make a strong effort.
The Society of Authors said: 'As a matter of urgency, Meta needs to compensate the rights-holders of all the works it has been exploiting.'

CEO Anna Ganley stated: "Instead of seeking approval and paying for these copyrighted resources, AI firms are deliberately opting to take them as they compete to become the dominant force in the market."
This is alarming conduct from major technology companies, which is facilitated by governments failing to step in and reinforce existing copyright safeguards.
Leading individuals from music, media, and film industries have supported a significant Daily Mail initiative aimed at safeguarding Britain's creative sectors from the potential risks posed by artificial intelligence.
The current Labour administration plans to introduce legislation allowing major technology companies to utilize all forms of online content for enhancing their artificial intelligence systems, bypassing copyright regulations designed to compensate those who created the work.
Creators would instead have to choose not to allow their work to be exploited.
